Location: Addition and renovation of existing cape style residence in Lordship neighborhood. Stratford, CT.
Program: In order to bring house to current standards the client required that a first floor master suite, an open floor plan concept, and a three car garage be included in the design. The updated plan should include two guest bedrooms, a study, and a first floor laundry and powder room. In addition, the first floor open plan with living, dining, and kitchen should be configured to maximize the water views.
Design Solution: By taking advantage of the oversized corner lot we were able to create an “L” shaped floor plan with the master suite and garages located at opposite corners of the house. The original first floor was completely gutted to provide an open concept plan for the kitchen, living, and dining rooms. A centrally located stair was moved to a rear corner where it would not impede views or the flow of the open plan. An angled jog in floor plan between the original house and garages provides space for a new powder room, laundry, and an additional stair leading to the study over the garages. To keep the architectural character of cape style home intact the master suite and garage addition roof lines where kept below the main house, and roof pitches and overhangs detailed to match the cape style. An open front porch and smaller addition for the kitchen were designed similarly.
