Location: Governor's Lane Residence
Program: The original house was designed as a two story colonial with a gabled roofline fronting the street. The main entry was a simple covered porch located away from view. Several additions at the rear of the home added living space but detracted from the colonial character. The new owner’s requirements for an open first floor plan with formal living and dining rooms, three bedrooms and a master suite on the second floor, a third floor office, and a lower level game room more than doubled the usable living area. Budget constraints required that the majority of the home’s original structure and rooflines be retained.

Design Solution: Using several smaller additions with gabled roofs at the front and sides of the home, and an expanded main roofline the required living space was obtained. A gabled front porch extending to the east provided for a future transition to the attached garages. Excavation into the sloped hillside provided for use of the lower level with full height windows and French doors leading to grade. Consistent use of trim details, similar window proportions, and roof pitches unify the home.
