Location: Burr Street Renovation & Addition
Program: The design of original house and porches are relatively unchanged since initially built. Living room, Dining Room, and a Study occupy the original first floor. The original second floor consists of 3 bedrooms and a single bath. The Owners would like to create a new first floor space shared by a Kitchen, Great Room, and informal Dining. A private master suite will occupy the second floor addition. The design and detailing should compliment the original house.
Client: A young family with children who would like to update home to modern standards.
Design Solution: This new renovation and addition was offset from the original house which allowed for an open stair between the original houses and new living spaces. A cramped and dated 1960’s addition containing the kitchen and family room with several second floor bedrooms at the rear of the home was removed. The stair; with a flat roof; allowed for an esthetic transition between the original and new spaces, and also for an increase in ceiling heights in the new rooms. Replicating original trim details and roof lines within the new work, and continuing the lines of the open porches around the addition unifies the home.
